PATRICIA DINU

SEARCHING BARBELO

Originally conceived and started by Anselm Spring, multimedia artist, he now has been joined by Patricia Dinu to complete this project.
The idea:
In Old Jerusalem the most visited must-see tourist attraction is the “Via Dolorosa” , the “Way of Grief”. Christ’s crucifixion and suffering no doubt was terrible.  Especially in the churches of Southern Germany and Austria one will find high or low relief  images – mostly 14 stations of Christ’s Passion.
The artists try to interprete the suffering of the Feminine, female … the mother. The project could be named “The Passion of Barbelo” – nothing but a global, heart-breaking “Via Dolorosa” of the feminine .
The original images are high relief objects, composed of “readymade “ materials... Barbie and Ken are central to the installations, which over the years were exposed to violence, disintegration ( in nature) , “deliberate abuse” ( by the artist) ... it still is a work in progress , always documented in thousands of photographs.
Over one year ago Ms. Dinu started photographing this objects and with all the freedom of an artist, interprets these as visual digital artist. Inspired she also creates her own installations.
Visitors who by chance or invitation make the steep, rough dirt-road up to Springhill, Boulder, Utah describe their spontaneous, first impression. For instance Roger F., owner of vine-yards, South Africa :
"Anselm Spring, a world famous photographer with over 70  book publications to his credit becomes my friend. His house balancing barely on the plateau of a huge slick rock boulder of sedimentary origin. The road is so steep,  I  have to park at the bottom and walk—almost vertically…symbolic - I understand, when I visit first time - for a different dimension he inhabits intellectually and artistically…….
Needless to mention that in the absence of any other diva, the Barbies hold sway over his artistic empire: 100’s hang from an all season X-mas tree perched in the center of his universe; naked, blond and red-lipped they are suspended at all angles like angels from the branches of the rusting contraption, some in flight, others pell-mell like a bountiful gush of presents sprawled at the tree’s base, seductively spreading legs and pursing lips tempting with their fleshy pinkness….
However, not all is just glory. There is gore too, nearby: a wheelbarrow brimful with Babes, layered to the very top. In their nakedness and hotchpotch array, lifeless and bleached by the desert sun, silent and convoluted they do not miss to allude to the mass graves of the Nazi concentration camps… and hotchpotch array, lifeless and bleached by the desert sun, silent and convoluted"

Another visitor, writes: “... or is his barbie art a distortion of femininity? ...most people thought the barbie art was twisted & the photographs were beautiful.  I felt exactly the opposite.  What's wrong with me that I love things most people find disturbing?  granted, I adore barbie in all her distorted splendor. There's so much, much more to say.  Sadly, this is a blog post and not a chapter in a book, so i must end it here. I know my life, heart, body, and mind changed forever in Boulder, Utah, the tight place of all tight places."

Barbie in this exhibition symbolizes the presence of the man-made ideal as artificial , plastic Barbie –Idol , the ego or I-Doll for that matter , then symbolically would represent the presence of the artificial , man-mad world.
